Public Records Research Tip
When I receive the same request twice in one week I know I have a blog item.
The question:
Where on the Internet is the form for filling out a public records request?
The answer:
For public records in Oregon visit Open Oregon. This site has sample letters, quick reference guides, legal opinions (many submitted by Therese Bottomly), and HIPPA information, written by Andy Dworkin.
For federal government agencies use:
The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and its FOI Service Center
The Freedom of Information Center.
Additional tips to help make your life easier:
-Send your request to the right office and person.
-Be specific.
-Save everything you send and keep track of your requests.
-Ask a colleagues for guidance. We have many people at this paper that can guide you through the process.
