Beyond the Byline
American Journalism Review August/September 2006 Preview
"Newsroom researchers are beginning to get the credit they deserve."
Taking a break from the usual postings to toot our own horn a bit. This is a good overview of what a good news research team does... what our news researcher team routinely does.
Thanks to Amy Starke for pointing it out.

U.S.Congress Votes database
Created by the Washington Post, this site lets you "browse every vote in the U.S. Congress since the 102nd Congress (1991)." Browse by aggregate or for individual members of Congress.
"This site publishes an RSS feed of recent votes by each member of Congress, and a feed of the most recent votes in both chambers. See the RSS page for full details.
This site is generally updated every day, although there is a delay between a vote in Congress and its appearance on the official Congress Web sites."

Wonderground.com - Historic Weather
Actually this site includes current weather, too, but
scroll down a screen page to where it says History & Almanac, enter the date you want in the dropdown boxes and click on Go. The detail is fantastic... an hour by hour temp history... plus all the other weather conditions.
State of Oregon Voter Database
Now you can verify who votes... and who doesn't.
The new State of Oregon Voter Database has just been posted to the Newsroom Homepage and to your Start menu - News Tools - Research.
Included are:
Name
Address
Date of Birth
Precinct
Party affiliation
and Voting record (just click on "voterid")
The database works just like the DMV database. We'll update it after each primary and general election. It will also be a good place to quickly verify a current address.
